In 1980, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band started a six-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Against The Wind’.

For an angry 19-year-old reluctantly going through the motions of growing up, the defiance of Against The Wind was the affirmation that I was looking for. It was the fix that I needed.

More than 30 years later, it still speaks volumes, only that the angry young man has now been replaced by a grey-haired 50-something. But the song still screams of quiet resistance.

It was Dylan Thomas who penned:

“Do not go gentle into that goodnight. Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

Somehow, that feels just right. Not to accept defeat, not to be a “yes-man”, and not to agree with anything that you do not believe in. But standing up for a cause that you do believe in. Supporting issues that are close to your heart. That would be running against the wind.
